Sailing Delos Cyclades

Sailing Greece - Delos island

Delos (Dilos) island is best visited via the adjacent island of Mykonos, and is famous for its extensive archaeological sites of great importance. Whereas on most Cycladic islands digs have yet to begin - Santorini as noteworthy exception - in Delos, the excavations are thorough and show clearly the ancient buildings and other structures.

Note, that it is not allowed for yachties to anchor off Delos and set foot on the island unsupervised due to the necessary protection of the archaeological sites which have proven to be quite vulnerable. The proper way to explore these ancient sites is with a guide on a tripper boat from Mykonos port. Apart from this obstacle, Delos is one of the most interesting islands in the Cyclades and perhaps the whole Aegean and should be included in many yacht charters and sailing holidays in Greece if possible. Indeed, many bareboat sailing holidays purposely start out in nearby Syros, Aegina - Athens or Lavrion, and more recently - especially for gulet motorsailers (caiques) - Mykonos has become a charter base as well.
