Further away from thronged
Athens and the
Saronic -
Argolic Gulfs, the east
Aegean immediately appeals due to the minimum amount of tourists even in the
main sailing season. Even more remote are the southern Sporadic islands of
Samos, Ikaria, Chios and Lesbos, which should ideally be explored by
sailing yacht or
catamaran. Indeed by sea transport is by far the best method to reach and visit the various ports and
anchorages that are ignored by the large ferries and cruise ships. There are several reasons why such
sailing holidays are cheaper than
island hopping on ferries.
- The most interesting islands are not frequented daily by ferries
- Even on the visited islands the ferry will dock only in the main port, not the myriad of bays, picturesque ports and anchorages. Therefore extra transportation is needed
- Sleeping is done on the sailing yacht or catamaran, you have your own en-suite cabin onboard!
- Cooking also can be done on the yacht - there is a kitchen called a galley
But most importantly, the freedom on
yacht charters is much greater than on a ferry island hopping cruise. The invariable
luxurious yacht charters will allow you to sail your own itinerary, see what you prefer to visit and leave whenever you like.
Hence, the popularity of reaching the secluded bays - overlooked by a Greek temple or a medieval castle - by own transportation: a sailing yacht usually a Jeanneau, Beneteau, Oceanis, Cyclades, Ocean Star, Hanse, Bavaria, etc. For catamarans there is also plenty of choice:
