Greece is certainly
number one
regarding: beaches, ancient archaeological sites and length of coastline. Moreover, the Aegean and Ionian Seas offer literally thousands and thousands of islands spread throughout these translucent blue waters. Therefore, a
vacation in Greece is particularly ideal for a certain types of holidays:
- Beach vacation Greece - especially Skiathos, Skopelos (both in the Northern Sporades) are known for their stunning beaches, which are said to be the best of the whole Mediterranean. Also, the islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lefkas and Corfu in the Ionian offer beautiful beaches.
In the Aegean, the following islands are ideal too: Samos, Nisyros, Kos, Rhodes, Paros, Santorini and Mykonos.
Closer to Athens, Hydra island and Spetses island are recommended.
- Honeymoon vacation Greece - The Ionian and the Aegean Seas are perfectly suited for a romantic vacation Greece. If seasickness is a concern the best places to start are Athens, or Lefkas in the Ionian.
From Athens you can cruise the beautiful Saronic Gulf and the even more alluring Argolic Gulf. For the Argolic, it is advised to sail at least for 10 days, preferable for 14 days, since in just one week only the Saronic is within reach.
The most luxurious vacation Greece option for your honeymoon is a cruise on the romantic gulet motorsailers. Such honeymoons are called blue cruises or blue voyages and take place either along the Turquoise coast of Turkey (Carian coast - Bodrum) or along the Dodecanese islands (Samos, Kos, Symi, Rhodes).
- Sailing vacation Greece - For yachting, cruising and sailing, these waters are truly quintessential. Not only because of the sheer size of these sailing grounds (even in a full year of sailing you won't be able to see all islands and coasts), but also for its veritable beauty and the diversity of characteristics among all the island groups. Also see my yacht charter guide.
- Cultural vacation Greece - Besides the omnipresent medieval remains from castles and fortresses, the more ancient ruins of the Roman or Greek eras are the most popular. Fortunately, nearly all of these archaeological sites (The Acropolis in Athens: Akropolis is the exception) are readily accessible for public and you are welcome to wander around the temple structures, amphitheatres or other colossal ancient monuments that have been excavated.
Strangely, despite the obvious differences between these types of vacations, each and every one of them is best done by yacht! Indeed, the concept of a
sailing vacation Greece, allows you to reach exactly the must-see archaeological sites, breath-taking beaches, temples, romantic tavernas or local charming fishing villages - in other words: the real Greece. By island-hopping with ferries and hydrofoils all these places will be out of reach since these larger vessels - much like the large cruise ships - have to dock at the major commercial ports instead.
