The
Eastern Sporades (also known as the
Southern Sporades) is one of the least travelled
sailing areas in Greece, lovely remote yet filled to the brim with stunning islands with picturesque ports and anchorages. The more famous (especially for the pristine beaches)
Northern Sporades consist of
Skiathos,
Skopelos,
Alonissos,
Skyros, etc.
The Easter Sporades consist of:
- Limnos
- Agios Efstratios
- Lesbos
- Chios
- Psara
- Samos
- Ikaria
- Fourni (Fournoi)
And while Limnos and Lesbos (Lesvos) are really remote, the islands of Psara and Chios are well within reach for
yacht charters and sailing holidays, even from the
Dodecanese. The most practical bases for
yacht charters are
Kos and especially
Samos, Pythagorion port (Pythagoreio port). These yacht charter vacations should preferably be longer than a week, since a) there is so much to see in both the Dodecanese as well as the Eastern Sporades, b) the distances involved in this part of
the Aegean.
Limnos island can better be reached from Skiathos than from Samos yacht charters base!
Chios (also known as Hios or Khios) is a massive island, worth circumnavigating. Although the north-east of the island is devoid of suitable harbours or anchorages it features the neighbouring islet of Psara.
For most yacht charters the island of Chios is the most northern point of the itinerary. Ideally sailing north against the prevailing winds from Samos or Kos and the second part of the holiday with the winds from behind back to the charter base.
Sailing in Chios and Turkey
Across the border with Turkey lies the beautiful
Turquoise coast: the
Ionian coast, ideal for
blue cruises and
luxury gulet motorsailing holidays.
Ports of entry for
sailing between Greece and Turkey are Lesvos, (Mytilini)
Chios, Samos and on the Turkish side İzmir, Çeşme and Kuşadası.
