Ionian sailing guide to yacht charters

Ionian and Athens yacht charters

Although the Athens sailing area (Saronic Gulf and Argolic Gulf) is more popular with sailor because of the easy flights on Athens international Airport, the Ionian is a good second and has some advantages, but not as big an airport. The main advantages over Athens are the lush and green and fertile surroundings and swimmable conditions. Furthermore, the child friendly sailing conditions with easy winds and hardly any waves are better than the sailing conditions in Athens, Saronic and Argolic Gulfs which can be windswept if the Meltemi winds spoils the fun (mostly only in August though).

The big downside of yacht charters in the Ionian are the vast amount of beginner sailors, sailing schools and flotilla cruises that frequent these islands. So for both the Athens, Saronic and Argolic areas as well as the Ionian islands: best to avoid the busy summer months and plan your yacht charters in May, June or September!
