Milos to the west is another volcano and offers an attractive mini cruising area, equally suited for sailing holidays in these southern Cyclades, and there is - similar to Folegandros - a breathtaking Chora to explore. Further east is the island of Amorgos, with its many stunning anchorages such as Fjord Bay (also known as Vlikada Bay) which has a very narrow entrance between high cliffs ending in a tiny beach.
Santorini self is a collection of islands of which the larger and most important is Thira or Thera. Other islands include Thirasia, Aspro and the newly formed volcanic islets in the middle: Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni. A yacht can anchor in various bays to get experience the sensation of a working volcano within the flooded caldera of an older one. Together with the white houses perched higher up this is a truly unique venue and so special that it was a shame that recently many reliable yacht charter companies and agents didn't use this island as a base for sailing holidays - see my guide on yacht charters.
The photo above of a vineyard shows the vines, typically on Santorini, wrapped in tight circles. Each plant is protected from the harsh winds in a so-called “Stefani”.
