The
Aegean Sea - and the
Cyclades in particular - is a superb sailing area for yacht charters either bareboat or crewed. Moreover, the Cyclades can easily be reached through the practical yacht charter bases of
Poros,
Athens or
Lavrion. Especially, Lavrion with easy access directly (one day trip) to
Kea island - the northernmost island of the Cyclades - is very suitable for yacht charters and sailing holidays in the Aegean.
Indeed, many itineraries include the island of Kea.
Yacht charters in this region are mostly fully crewed or rather the opposite: bareboat. Yet, it is also possible to visit this beautiful island with a
flotilla fleet from Poros port. Typically you will on these itineraries focus on the northern Cyclades since the southern islands are well out of reach in 7 days (the average sailing vacation period). If you want access to
Santorini island,
Folegandros island,
Naxos island and
Amorgos island, the
yacht charter base of Paros (Parikia port) is more suitable; frequent ferries and hydrofoils per day from Piraeus, Athens. However, when choosing Paros as your starting base, the Kea yacht charters option is rarely included in the sailing route.
Bareboat or crewed yacht charters
For a
bareboat yacht charter in the northern Cyclades (the Kythnos, Mykonos, Syros, Delos, Andros, Tinos and Kea yacht charters option), it is best to start from Lavrion. Note, that at least one of your crew should be able to skipper that particular yacht, preferable having the appropriate certificates.
For
crewed yacht charters there are several options:
Also note the differences between
full charters,
private charters,
cabin charters and
berth charters. The first two option means that you and your party will rent the whole ship for yourself, in the last two options you will only rent cabins or berths and there will be other guests (strangers) on board as well.
The photo above shows Korissia port on Kea. Yacht charters and sailing vacations are popular here, not only due to its vicinity with Athens but also for the history and beauty of the island.
